Rafa Benitez could be making big error by not sealing £20m Joe Allen deal
According to reports in the The Chronicle, Newcastle United may turn down the chance to sign Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen in a £20m deal this summer despite being offered the opportunity to buy the Welshman.
What’s the word, then?
Well, The Chronicle says that Magpies manager Rafa Benitez could bring the 28-year-old, once described as the ‘Welsh Pirlo’, to St James’ Park following the Potters’ relegation as long as he could guarantee him first-team football, but that is something the Spaniard can’t do.
The Chronicle says that Mikel Merino is already frustrated that he can’t get a starting spot with Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame established as the first-choice midfield pairing, and they don’t really need another option considering they also have Isaac Hayden that can play there.
The report adds that rather than spending £20m on a player in position they don’t really need one, Newcastle, whose fans don’t want a former 25-year-old flop to return this summer could look to use the money to bring in an individual in one that needs strengthening.
How did Allen do this season?
While Stoke went down to the Championship following a hugely disappointing campaign, the Wales international was still one of their best and most consistent performers.
The 28-year-old scored two goals and provided a further six assists in 36 Premier League appearances, while he netted four times in 38 outings in all competitions.
Known for his neatness on the ball and his ability from both an attacking and defensive point of view and hugely experienced in the English top flight, he could be one of the first faces through the Britannia Stadium exit door this summer.
Would Benitez be making a mistake by not signing him?
They probably would be even though it would be a deal that would break their transfer record.
While they do have good options in the middle of the field, Diame turns 31 next month and is getting no younger, Shelvey could easily be snapped up by a top-six club in the future if he keeps his strong performances up and Merino could be tempted by a Spain return.
In addition, Allen is also available to play in a more attacking role where he could provide real competition for Ayoze Perez, and £20m for an experienced player that cover more than one position could prove to be something of a bargain in the long run.
